Ford PM â Hawkish Fed Minutes and Renewed Relative Weakness Keep Red in Control
By Douglas Sterling
Overall trading condition: ð´ RED.
At 12:56 p.m. America/Denver, Ford traded at $12.10, down 1.47%, after opening at $12.20 and ranging from $12.04 to $12.32 on 20.41 million shares. SPY was down 0.18%, so Ford underperformed by about 1.29 percentage points. The stock tested Tuesdayâs breakout zone and then reversed toward $12; that is distribution-like price action, though the incomplete session volume cannot yet confirm full-session distribution.
What materially changed since Tuesday: Ford finished Tuesday at $12.28 (+1.07%) and outperformed the S&P 500 by about 0.49 point, but Wednesday erased that relative-strength improvement. The 10-year Treasury auction drew unusually strong demand, yet the high yield was still 5.30%. More importantly, the September FOMC minutes said most participants judged another rate increase likely appropriate by year-end. That keeps financing and valuation pressure elevated even as Fordâs truck and hybrid mix remains constructive.
Ford Calendar & Immediate Catalysts
TOMORROW â Thursday, October 8, 6:30 a.m. America/Denver â ð¡ Yellow: U.S. initial jobless claims. A softer labor reading could reduce rate pressure, but a sharp deterioration would raise vehicle-demand concerns.
TOMORROW â Thursday, October 8, 11:00 a.m. America/Denver â ð¡/ð´ Yellow-Red: U.S. 30-year Treasury bond auction. The long end remains the cleanest external affordability catalyst for Ford; a weak auction would reinforce pressure on auto-loan rates and Ford Credit funding.
ð£ Purple â Ford Q3 earnings timing. Market calendars estimate an October 28 release, but Ford Investor Relations had not posted a confirmed Q3 event time in the official events view observed for this report. The latest Ford Motor filing shown by Investor Relations remained the October 2 Form 8-K. No new dividend declaration, annual-meeting notice, labor stoppage or Ford-specific production shutdown was verified Wednesday.
Price Action, Volume and Relative Performance
Verified live snapshot: F $12.10 (-1.47%), open $12.20, high $12.32, low $12.04, volume 20.41 million; SPY $777.71 (-0.18%). Observation: 12:56 p.m. Denver, with the regular session open.
Verified prior close: Ford closed Tuesday at $12.28 (+1.07%) on 35.5 million shares, below its 50-day average of 47.2 million. The S&P 500 gained 0.58%.
Inference: Wednesdayâs lower price, rejection from $12.32 and material SPY underperformance are negative. The volume was not yet comparable with a completed session, so âconfirmed distributionâ would overstate the evidence.
- Support: $12.04, then $12.00/$11.97; stop-level deterioration begins below $11.90.
- Resistance: $12.20-$12.32, then $12.50.
- Upgrade trigger: a completed close above $12.50 on above-normal volume while Ford narrows or reverses the SPY gap.
Ford News, Supply Chain, Quality and Competition
ð¡ Supply chain â verified: Ford said the late-September F-150 supplier interruption was unrelated to aluminum, had been resolved, and should be containable within its $10-$11 billion 2026 adjusted-EBIT guidance. No newer material Ford-linked supply interruption was verified. Novelisâ Oswego aluminum operation had already resumed production; Ford later said its related supply position had fully recovered.
ð¡ Broader supply conditions: The New York Fedâs Global Supply Chain Pressure Index rose to 1.28 in September from a revised 1.20 in August, a modest deterioration but not evidence of a fresh Ford-specific stoppage.
ð¡ Quality/recall â verified: Fordâs newly disclosed headlamp campaign covers 41,748 2025-2027 Expeditions and 2026 F-250/F-350/F-450/F-550 Super Duty trucks. NHTSA documents attribute the risk to contamination under an LED chip at a supplier facility; Ford estimates about 1% of the population contains the fault. Dealer notices begin October 26 and owner letters November 6. The scale appears manageable, but it keeps quality costs on watch.
ð¢ Product/mix: Ford reported September F-Series sales of 67,448 (+2.4%), Q3 F-Series production of 266,777 (+4.5%), Super Duty production of 110,275 (+4.4%), Maverick Hybrid sales of 27,793 (+59.6%), and record Q3 Bronco sales of 38,020.
ð¡ Competition: GMâs Q3 U.S. sales fell 5.5%, while Toyotaâs hybrid-heavy lineup supported 633,223 U.S. sales. Fordâs truck and hybrid niches are working, but the broader competitive share shift remains a caution.
Sales and Demand
| Reporter | Period | Actual reported figure | Comparison | Ford impact |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ford | Q3 2026 U.S. | 509,764 vehicles | -6.6% y/y | ð¡/ð´ |
| Ford estimate | Q3 ex-Escape/Corsair | Essentially flat | Industry about -1% | ð¢/ð¡ |
| Ford estimate | Q3 retail share ex exits | 12.1% | +0.4 pp y/y | ð¢ |
| Ford | September F-Series | 67,448 | +2.4% y/y | ð¢ |
| Ford | Q3 Maverick Hybrid | 27,793 | +59.6% y/y | ð¢ |
| NADA | September U.S. light vehicles | 16.0 million SAAR | -3.6% y/y | ð¡ |
Fordâs official release is titled âFord Builds Q3 Momentum with Retail Share Gains, Strong Truck and Large SUV Performance.â The 509,764 total is reported actual sales. The ex-model and share comparisons are Ford estimates. NADAâs reported 16.0 million SAAR was below the earlier 16.3 million Cox forecast, so actual industry demand was softer than forecast.
Consumer Affordability, Lending and Discretionary Spending
There is no single official daily number for âhow many Americans have discretionary spending.â Real disposable personal income and real consumption are the appropriate nationwide proxies.
BEAâs September 30 release showed August real disposable personal income unchanged, real PCE up 0.6%, and a 4.1% saving rate. Spending held up, but inflation-adjusted after-tax income did not improve.
The Fedâs July SLOOS said auto-loan standards were basically unchanged, auto-loan demand weakened, and consumer-loan standards remained toward the tighter end of their historical ranges. The New York Fedâs June survey put the overall credit rejection rate at 16.1%, down from 23.1% a year earlier.
The latest available Fed G.19 release showed July consumer credit growing at a 4.2% annual rate, including 4.8% nonrevolving and 2.5% revolving credit. Q2 commercial-bank new-car rates averaged 7.14% for 60 months and 6.97% for 72 months; finance-company new-car loans averaged 6.3% with $41,705 financed. The scheduled October 7 G.19 update had not appeared on the Fedâs current-release page as of 1:02 p.m. Denver, so no August figure is presented as current.
Ford Creditâs Q2 filing reported $757 million of earnings before taxes, up $112 million, while the U.S. retail loss-to-receivables ratio rose to 52 basis points as repossessions and severity increased. Assessment: ð´ Red â availability is broadly stable, but consumersâ ability to finance a vehicle is worsening at the margin because benchmark yields, vehicle prices and fuel remain high.
Rates, Fed, Oil, Trade and Broader Drivers
ð´ Fed: September meeting minutes showed all participants supported the 25-basis-point increase to 3.75%-4.00%, and most judged another increase likely appropriate by year-end. Participants also saw upside inflation risks and noted greater strain on lower- and moderate-income households. This is a verified rate-policy headwind for Ford.
ð¡/ð´ Rates: Wednesdayâs $39 billion 10-year auction cleared at 5.30% with a 2.77 bid-to-cover ratio, the strongest since 2014; indirect bidders took 80.3% and dealers 2.5%. Strong demand helped the 10-year yield ease toward 5.28%, but the absolute level remains severely adverse for auto affordability.
ð¡/ð´ Oil: Brent was about $100.08 and WTI $88.26. Accelerated emergency-stock releases are helpful, but triple-digit Brent still squeezes household budgets and Fordâs freight/input chain.
ð£ Geopolitics: Middle East shipping risks, Iran-related supply disruptions and the final effects of strategic-stock releases remain outside Fordâs control.
ð¡ Tariffs/imports: The August U.S. trade deficit widened 13.7% to $105.6 billion as imports reached a record. That signals resilient demand but continued exposure to imported inputs and tariff policy; Ford has not disclosed a new Wednesday-specific tariff cost.
ð¡ EV/seasonality: NADA reported battery-electric sales down 29.2% year over year through September after the federal tax-credit unwind. That is negative for EV scale economics but increases the strategic value of Fordâs hybrid momentum. Early-Q4 seasonality is only a mild tailwind.
Permanent Options Analysis
ð¡/ð£ Yellow-Purple â OI is lagged; Wednesday activity is partial. Open interest generally reflects the prior close. Current-day volume and premium changes below were observed at 11:24 a.m. Denver and were not final.
October 9 expiration
| Rank | Call strike | Call OI | Wed. volume | Premium move | Put strike | Put OI | Wed. volume | Premium move |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | $12.50 | 8,447 | 1,594 | -66.7% | $12.00 | 5,439* | n/v | n/v |
| 2 | $13.00 | 4,200 | 330 | -50.0% | $12.50 | 2,714 | 194 | +57.1% |
| 3 | $13.50 | 3,901 | 12 | 0.0% | $13.00 | 2,131 | 62 | +19.5% |
The $12 put OI is from the prior-close chain; Wednesday volume/premium were not independently verified. At $12.10, the $12.50/$13 calls were out of the money and the same-strike puts were in the money. Falling call premiums and rising put premiums are consistent with the stock decline, but transaction direction is unknown. The immediate battle zone is $12-$12.50*.
October 16 expiration
| Rank | Call strike | Call OI | Oct. 6 volume | Put strike | Put OI | Oct. 6 volume |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | $14.00 | 14,835 | 178 | $12.00 | 13,580 | 691 |
| 2 | $15.00 | 9,745 | 24 | $13.00 | 12,248 | 255 |
| 3 | $13.00 | 5,503 | 332 | $14.00 | 9,328 | 205 |
Across six displayed expirations after Tuesdayâs close, call OI was 101,603 and put OI 82,385, an OI put/call ratio near 0.81. Tuesday volume was 17,677 calls and 6,733 puts, a volume put/call ratio of 0.38. The October 16 structure places the densest downside hedge/support interest at $12-$13 and the largest upside call concentration at $14-$15. Options describe positioning, not prediction.
Historical and Continuing-Story Comparison
Fordâs completed closes from September 29 through October 6 were $12.30, $12.06, $12.27, $12.10, $12.15 and $12.28. Wednesdayâs $12.10 snapshot gives back Tuesdayâs gain and returns the stock to the middle of the recent range.
On October 7, 2025, Ford opened at $12.50, traded as high as $12.53, fell to $11.74 and closed at $11.92 on 154.39 million shares. Todayâs rejection from $12.32 rhymes with that calendar-day reversal, but the magnitude and participation are far smaller so far; the comparison is context, not a forecast.
Tuesdayâs prior-report trigger score: $12.30 was reached but not held, $12.50 was not tested, and completed volume remained below normal. The Yellow upgrade sequence therefore failed.
Rest-of-Day and Thursday Outlook
Condition: ð´ Red with a narrow Yellow recovery path.
- Bullish sequence: hold $12.04/$12.00, recover $12.20-$12.32, then close above $12.50 on stronger volume and improved relative strength.
- Neutral/base case: stay between $12.00 and $12.32 while long yields and SPY dominate.
- Bearish sequence: close below $12.00, then lose $11.90 on expanding completed-session volume.

What Must Happen Next
Ford must hold $12, reclaim $12.20-$12.32, then close above $12.50 with stronger volume while narrowing the SPY gap. Until that happensâor long yields fall materiallyâthe favorable truck, hybrid and adjusted-share evidence does not overturn the Red condition.
