Ford PM: Red Condition Holds Into Monday
By Douglas Sterling
Overall trading condition: ð´ Red. Ford enters Monday from a weak technical position. Friday's verified close was $12.10, down 1.39%, with a $12.30 high, $11.97 low and roughly 49.1 million shares traded. The S&P 500 gained 0.73%, making Ford's relative underperformance the most important price signal. The meaningful improvement since the prior report is informational rather than technical: fresh October 9 and October 16 options positioning is now available, so those expirations no longer need to be treated as unknown.
Ford Calendar & Immediate Catalysts
TOMORROW â 8:00 a.m. America/Denver: September ISM Services PMI â ð¡ Yellow. ISM confirms the September report will be released Monday, October 5 at 10:00 a.m. ET. The prices and employment components matter directly to Treasury yields, inflation expectations and vehicle affordability.
Wednesday, October 7 â FOMC minutes â ð¡ Yellow. The minutes can change expectations for the next Fed move, particularly after Friday's weak payroll report sharply reduced expectations for an October increase.
October 28 â Ford Q3 earnings â ð£ Purple on exact webcast timing. Market calendars point to October 28, but an exact Ford-authorized webcast time was not independently confirmed from Ford Investor Relations in this run, so no exact time is asserted.
No new Sunday Ford dividend declaration, material Ford Motor SEC filing, NHTSA action, labor announcement or new Ford-linked supply interruption was verified.
What Materially Changed
The cash market did not trade Sunday, so Friday's $12.10 close remains the price baseline. Oil eased modestly Sunday as Middle East exports improved and G7 countries prepared emergency stock releases; Reuters reported Brent near $101.59 and WTI near $90.12. That is directionally helpful, but absolute fuel prices remain a consumer headwind.
Fresh Friday end-of-day options data now provide a clearer short-term map. The October 9 chain concentrates activity around $12.00-$12.50, while the October 16 chain carries substantial put open interest at $12, $13 and $14.
Price Action
Verified facts: Ford opened Friday at $12.30, traded between $11.97 and $12.30, and closed at $12.10, down 1.39%. Volume was approximately 49.1 million shares. The S&P 500 gained 0.73%.
Inference: Ford's decline against a rising market is distribution-like relative weakness, but Friday's volume was not extreme enough to call it capitulation.
Immediate support is $12.00/$11.97, followed by approximately $11.90. Resistance begins around $12.27-$12.30, then $12.50. A close above $12.50 on stronger volume would be the first meaningful repair signal. An expanding-volume break below $11.90 would keep the condition Red and expose the lower $11s.
Ford News, Production and Supply Chain
Ford's latest major company-specific development remains its Q3 U.S. sales report. Ford sold 509,764 vehicles in the quarter, down 6.6% year over year. Reuters attributed part of the decline to the phase-out of the Escape and Lincoln Corsair.
ð¡ Supply chain: CEO Jim Farley said the recent supplier problem that interrupted F-150 production in the Detroit area and Kansas City was resolved and production restarted. The disruption will affect Q3 wholesale volume, but Ford did not disclose an exact lost-unit count. Farley also said Ford had recovered from the earlier Novelis aluminum-supply disruption. No additional material Ford-linked supplier interruption was verified Sunday.
ð¡ Quality/recalls: No new material Sunday NHTSA action was verified. Existing recall and warranty exposure remains a background cost risk rather than a new catalyst.
ð¡ Ford Credit: Ford Credit filed an 8-K on September 29 concerning other events/financial exhibits; no newer weekend Ford Credit operating disclosure was found.
Sales and Demand
Actual â Ford Q3 U.S. sales: 509,764, down 6.6% year over year â ð¡/ð´.
Actual â Ford trucks: 315,112, up 0.5% â ð¢.
Actual â Maverick: 41,970, up more than 20% â ð¢. Reuters reported stronger hybrid demand as gasoline prices rose.
Industrywide Q3 U.S. sales were estimated around 4.1 million, down about 1%, while Toyota and other Asian manufacturers benefited from hybrid-heavy lineups. Ford's headline decline was therefore worse than the industry estimate, though product phase-outs distorted the comparison.
Consumer Affordability, Lending and Discretionary Spending
There is no single official daily number for âhow many Americans have discretionary spending.â Real disposable personal income and real consumption/retail activity are the nationwide proxies.
BEA's August release showed real disposable personal income unchanged from July. Current-dollar PCE rose 0.9%, and the personal saving rate was 4.1%. Consumers continued spending, but inflation-adjusted after-tax income did not improve.
The Federal Reserve's July Senior Loan Officer Opinion Survey found auto-loan standards basically unchanged, but auto-loan demand weakened. Standards for consumer loans remained toward the tighter end of their historical range.
The New York Fed's June Credit Access Survey reported an overall credit rejection rate of 16.1%, versus 23.1% a year earlier.
Assessment: ð¡/ð´. Access to credit is not collapsing, but vehicle affordability remains strained by high transaction prices, long-term yields and fuel costs.
Rates, Fed, Energy and Broader Drivers
ð´ Treasury yields: The 10-year Treasury yield remained around the 5.25%-5.27% area Friday, near multi-decade highs. That keeps financing conditions restrictive for vehicle buyers and Ford itself.
ð¢/ð¡ Fed expectations: Friday's weak September payroll report â only 29,000 jobs added â sharply reduced expectations for an October rate increase. That is favorable at the margin, but Ford needs long yields to decline for the financing channel to improve materially.
ð´/ð¡ Oil: Reuters reported Sunday Brent near $101.59 and WTI near $90.12 as increased Middle East exports and planned G7 emergency-stock releases eased prices. The direction improved; the absolute level remains adverse.
ð£ Geopolitics: The Middle East conflict and attacks affecting energy infrastructure remain outside Ford's control and can rapidly reverse oil-price relief.
ð¡ EV/competition: Tesla delivered 486,532 vehicles in Q3, above expectations, while Toyota and Honda continue to benefit from strong hybrid portfolios. Ford's hybrid strength is valuable, but competition remains intense.
Permanent Options Analysis
Options describe positioning, not prediction.
October 9 expiration
Largest verified call open-interest concentrations:
- $13.50 call: 3,740 OI; 534 volume
- $13.00 call: 2,849 OI; 1,451 volume
- $14.00 call: 2,682 OI; 15 volume
- $12.50 call: 2,316 OI; 3,909 volume
Largest verified put concentrations:
- $12.50 put: 2,595 OI; 496 volume
- $13.00 put: 2,312 OI; 116 volume
- $13.50 put: 1,735 OI; 10 volume
- $11.50 put: 1,347 OI; 659 volume
- $12.00 put: 1,242 OI; 1,038 volume
The clearest volume/OI anomaly is the $12.50 call, where Friday volume exceeded existing OI. At a $12.10 stock price, the $12.50 call is out of the money and the $12.50 put is in the money. The immediate positioning zone is $12-$12.50.
October 16 expiration
Largest verified visible call concentrations:
- $14 call: 14,933 OI; 462 volume
- $15 call: 9,839 OI; 63 volume
Largest verified put concentrations:
- $12 put: 13,314 OI; 854 volume
- $13 put: 12,410 OI; 452 volume
- $14 put: 10,269 OI; 98 volume
- $12.50 put: 3,253 OI; 322 volume
- $11 put: 2,679 OI; 1,780 volume
The October 16 chain shows substantial downside/hedging inventory, but OI alone cannot tell whether those contracts are long puts, short puts or legs of spreads. The $11 put also showed unusually active Friday volume.
Options condition: ð¡ Yellow. Fresh positioning is available, but it is not a directional forecast.
Historical Comparison
On October 3, 2025, Ford closed at $12.67 after trading $12.20-$12.67 on about 100.8 million shares. The following Monday, October 6, 2025, Ford closed at $12.70 after reaching $12.80.
That history shows Ford rallied in the comparable early-October window last year. It is context, not a forecast. This year's backdrop includes 5%+ Treasury yields, $90+ WTI crude and a 6.6% headline Q3 Ford sales decline.
Monday Opening & Trading-Day Outlook â Forecast Locked Sunday
Expected condition: ð¡/ð´ Yellow-to-Red transition risk.
Base case: Ford tests whether the $12 area can hold while markets digest ISM Services, Treasury yields and oil.
Upside sequence: $12.27-$12.30 â $12.50. A close above $12.50 on above-normal volume would materially improve the setup.
Downside sequence: $11.97 â $11.90. A sustained break below $11.90 with expanding volume keeps Red and increases risk toward the lower $11s.
Options tell: Watch the October 9 $12-$12.50 strikes, especially whether Monday activity continues at the $12.50 call and near-$12 puts.
Monday's report should score the actual open, range, close, Ford-versus-S&P relative strength, volume, yields, oil and options activity against this locked forecast. It should not rewrite Sunday's estimate after the fact.

What Must Happen Next
Ford needs to hold $11.97-$12.00, reclaim $12.27-$12.30, and then close above $12.50 with stronger volume. Until that happens, the continuing story remains Red despite improving Fed expectations and Ford's pockets of truck/hybrid strength.
