Ford PM — Support Holds but Rates and Relative Weakness Keep Red in Control
Ford remained above $12 Tuesday afternoon, but it again lagged a rising market as Treasury financing costs stayed near multidecade highs.

Ford PM â Support Holds but Rates and Relative Weakness Keep Red in Control
By Douglas Sterling
Overall trading condition: ð´ RED.
At 12:50 p.m. America/Denver, Ford traded at $12.185, up 0.29%, after opening at $12.18 and ranging from $12.14 to $12.30 on 22.01 million shares. SPY was up 0.67%, leaving Ford about 0.38 percentage point behind. The stock continues to defend $12, but it has not produced the relative strength or volume needed to confirm accumulation.
What materially changed since Monday: Ford closed Monday at $12.15 (+0.41%), then reached the $12.30 resistance band Tuesday before fading back toward $12.18. The Treasury's $58 billion three-year auction cleared at 4.932%, the highest auction yield for that maturity since May 2006, while the 10-year yield eased only to roughly 5.27%. Oil stabilized near $90 WTI, and the New York Fed's supply-chain index rose modestly. The net effect is still caution: support is intact, but financing conditions remain adverse.
Ford Calendar & Immediate Catalysts
TOMORROW â Wednesday, October 7, 11:00 a.m. America/Denver â ð¡ Yellow: $39 billion 10-year Treasury note auction. The long end is the cleanest direct affordability catalyst for Ford. A weak auction or renewed rise above 5.3% in the 10-year yield would pressure auto financing and Ford Credit funding.
TOMORROW â Wednesday, October 7, 12:00 p.m. America/Denver â ð¡/ð£ Yellow-Purple: FOMC minutes. The Federal Reserve will publish the record of its September 15-16 meeting, when it raised the target range to 3.75%-4.00%. Markets will look for the threshold for another increase; interpretation is outside Ford's control.
TOMORROW â Wednesday, October 7, 1:00 p.m. America/Denver â ð¡ Yellow: Federal Reserve G.19 consumer credit. This is directly relevant to household borrowing capacity, although it is broader than auto credit and arrives near the end of the regular session.
October 28 â ð£ Purple on exact Ford webcast time. Ford Investor Relations is the authoritative calendar, but an exact Ford-authorized Q3 webcast time was not independently established in this review. No new Ford dividend declaration, shareholder-meeting notice, labor stoppage, or material Ford Motor filing was verified Tuesday.
Price Action, Volume and Relative Performance
Verified live snapshot: F $12.185 (+0.29%), open $12.18, high $12.30, low $12.14, volume 22.01 million. SPY +0.67%. The observation was made at 12:50:29 p.m. Denver with the regular session still open.
Verified prior close: Monday open $12.14, high $12.23, low $12.06, close $12.15 (+0.41%), volume approximately 35.52 million.
Inference: Tuesday's positive price is constructive only in an absolute sense. Ford's smaller gain than SPY, rejection at $12.30, and non-final volume do not confirm accumulation. Nor does the action show heavy distribution: the $12.14 low remained above Monday's $12.06 low.
- Support: $12.14, then $12.06 and $12.00/$11.97; stop-level deterioration begins below $11.90.
- Resistance: $12.23-$12.30, then $12.50.
- Upgrade trigger: a close above $12.50 on above-normal completed-session volume while Ford narrows the SPY gap.
Ford News, Supply Chain, Quality and Competition
ð¡ Supply chain: Ford's official Q3 release says the late-September F-150 supplier interruption was unrelated to aluminum and that its expected financial effect is containable within the company's $10-$11 billion 2026 adjusted-EBIT guidance. No new Tuesday Ford-linked production stoppage was verified.
ð¡ Broader supply conditions: The New York Fed's Global Supply Chain Pressure Index rose to 1.28 in September from a revised 1.20 in August, still below May's 1.81. That is a modest cost-risk deterioration, not evidence of a new Ford-specific disruption.
ð¡ Quality/recall: Ford's newly disclosed headlamp campaign covers 41,748 2025-2027 Expeditions and 2026 F-250/F-350/F-450/F-550 Super Duty trucks. NHTSA documents cited by Car and Driver attribute the problem to possible contamination under an LED chip at a supplier facility; about 1% of the population is estimated to contain the fault. Dealer notification starts October 26 and owner letters November 6. The disclosed scale looks manageable, but the item reinforces Ford's continuing quality watch.
ð¢ Product/mix: Ford reported September F-Series sales of 67,448 (+2.4%), Q3 F-Series production of 266,777 (+4.5%), Super Duty production of 110,275 (+4.4%), Maverick Hybrid sales of 27,793 (+59.6%), and record Q3 Bronco sales of 38,020.
ð¡ Competition: Asian brands continue taking share with broader fuel-efficient lineups. GM's Q3 U.S. sales fell 5.5%, while Toyota closed the gap with 633,223 vehicles and strong hybrid demand. Ford's truck and hybrid niches are working, but the wider share shift remains unfavorable.
Sales and Demand
| Reporter | Period | Actual reported figure | Comparison | Ford impact |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ford | Q3 2026 U.S. | 509,764 vehicles | -6.6% y/y | ð¡/ð´ |
| Ford estimate | Q3 ex-Escape/Corsair | Essentially flat | Industry about -1% | ð¢/ð¡ |
| Ford estimate | Q3 retail share ex exits | 12.1% | +0.4 pp y/y | ð¢ |
| Ford | September F-Series | 67,448 | +2.4% y/y | ð¢ |
| Ford | Q3 Maverick Hybrid | 27,793 | +59.6% y/y | ð¢ |
| NADA | September U.S. light vehicles | 16.0 million SAAR | -3.6% y/y | ð¡ |
Ford's release is titled âFord Builds Q3 Momentum with Retail Share Gains, Strong Truck and Large SUV Performance.â The 509,764 total is reported actual sales. The ex-model and share comparisons are Ford estimates. NADA's industry SAAR confirms that overall demand remained resilient but slowed from August; Cox Automotive's earlier 16.3 million forecast was higher than the reported 16.0 million pace.
Consumer Affordability, Lending and Discretionary Spending
There is no single official daily number for âhow many Americans have discretionary spending.â Real disposable personal income and real consumption are the appropriate nationwide proxies.
BEA's September 30 release showed August real disposable personal income unchanged, real PCE up 0.6%, and a 4.1% saving rate. Consumers kept spending, but their inflation-adjusted after-tax income cushion did not expand.
The Fed's July Senior Loan Officer Opinion Survey reported auto-loan standards basically unchanged and auto-loan demand weaker. The New York Fed's June survey put the overall credit rejection rate at 16.1%, below 23.1% a year earlier; perceived rejection odds fell across credit types.
Ford Credit's Q2 filing reported $757 million of earnings before taxes, up $112 million, while the U.S. retail loss-to-receivables ratio rose to 52 basis points as repossessions and severity increased. Assessment: ð¡/ð´ â credit availability is not collapsing, but elevated vehicle prices, fuel and Treasury yields keep affordability worsening at the margin. Tomorrow's G.19 release is the next national credit update.
Rates, Fed, Oil, Trade and Broader Drivers
ð´ Rates: Tuesday's three-year auction cleared at 4.932% with a 2.62 bid-to-cover ratio. The 10-year yield eased to about 5.27%, but that remains a severe auto-finance headwind.
ð¡ Fed: The September policy range is 3.75%-4.00%. Weak September payroll growth reduced the probability of an October hike, but persistent inflation and Monday's high ISM prices reading leave December tightening risk alive.
ð¡/ð´ Oil: At 12:33 p.m. Eastern, Brent was $100.03 and WTI $89.59. Higher Middle East exports and planned G7 emergency releases are helpful, but the absolute price still squeezes household budgets and freight costs.
ð£ Geopolitics: Houthi attacks and Iran/Ukraine-related supply disruptions remain outside Ford's control. The G7 has not yet specified the composition and country allocation of its planned 100-million-barrel release.
ð¡ Tariffs/imports: The August U.S. trade deficit widened 13.7% to $105.6 billion as imports reached a record. That indicates resilient demand and continued dependence on imported inputs despite tariffs; it is not a new Ford-specific cost disclosure.
ð¡ EV and seasonality: NADA reported battery-electric sales down 29.2% year over year through September after the federal tax-credit unwind. That is adverse for EV scale economics but makes Ford's hybrid strength more valuable. Early-Q4 seasonality is a mild broad-market tailwind, not a substitute for Ford-specific confirmation.
Permanent Options Analysis
ð¡/ð£ Yellow-Purple â fresh OI is available through Monday's close; Tuesday intraday flow is not reliably verified. Open interest is reported with a session lag. The figures below describe positions outstanding as of the October 5 close, not live Tuesday trading. Premium-change direction and Tuesday volume/OI anomalies remain unknown.
October 9 expiration
| Rank | Call strike | Call OI | Monday volume | Put strike | Put OI | Monday volume |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | $12.50 | 5,106 | 7,405 | $12.00 | 3,709 | 3,295 |
| 2 | $13.50 | 3,778 | 42 | $12.50 | 2,716 | 339 |
| 3 | $13.00 | 3,497 | 1,194 | $13.00 | 2,288 | 160 |
The $12.50 call was the clearest Monday volume/OI anomaly: 7,405 contracts traded against 5,106 of OI. That does not reveal whether traders bought, sold, opened or closed positions. At $12.185, $12 calls are in the money and $12.50 calls are out of the money. The near-term battle zone remains $12-$12.50.
October 16 expiration
| Rank | Call strike | Call OI | Monday volume | Put strike | Put OI | Monday volume |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | $14.00 | 14,835 | 509 | $12.00 | 13,526 | 384 |
| 2 | $15.00 | 9,801 | 62 | $13.00 | 12,315 | 206 |
| 3 | $13.00 | 5,496 | 640 | $14.00 | 10,190 | 21 |
Across the six displayed expirations, call OI was 91,880 and put OI 80,004, an OI put/call ratio of approximately 0.87. Monday's volume put/call ratio was 0.39. These are positioning measures, not directional predictions; large puts may be hedges or short-premium positions.
Historical and Continuing-Story Comparison
Ford's last five completed closes were $12.30, $12.06, $12.27, $12.10 and $12.15. Tuesday's $12.185 snapshot preserves the $12 base but has not broken the lower-high pattern.
On October 6, 2025, Ford opened at $12.63, traded as high as $12.80, and closed at $12.70 on 90.54 million shares. That was a very different participation and rate environment; the comparison is context, not a forecast. The following day Ford fell sharply, illustrating why a one-day high is not confirmation.
Monday's forecast scored as follows: $12.06 held, $11.90 did not break, and $12.30 was tested but not held. The neutral base case remained intact.
Rest-of-Day and Wednesday Outlook
Condition: ð´ Red with a narrow Yellow path.
- Bullish sequence: hold $12.14, close above $12.30, then clear $12.50 on stronger completed-session volume and improved relative strength.
- Neutral/base case: remain between $12.00 and $12.30 while Treasury yields and SPY dominate.
- Bearish sequence: close below $12.00, then lose $11.90 on expanding volume.
Tomorrow's 10-year auction and FOMC minutes can move the most important external variable for Ford: long borrowing costs.

What Must Happen Next
Ford must hold $12, convert $12.23-$12.30 from resistance into support, then close above $12.50 with stronger volume while narrowing the SPY gap. Until that sequence occursâor long yields fall materiallyâthe improved truck, hybrid and adjusted-share fundamentals do not overturn the Red condition.
